Over the last few years, we have seen some major data breaches where sensitive customer data (i.e., SSN, Divers license numbers, Credit Cards) were subject to hackers. In the past, when I heard about these breaches I use to try to brush them to the side, but after seeing the scope (143 million affected consumers) of Equifax’s data breach, I am now recommending a credit freeze as a step to protect your wealth.
What
Clark Howard states, “A credit freeze allows you to seal your credit reports and use a personal identification number (PIN) that only you know and can use to temporarily “thaw” your credit when legitimate applications for credit and services need to be processed. The added layer of security means that thieves can’t establish new credit in your name even if they are able to obtain your personal information.”
Please use this GUIDE (CLICK HERE) to freeze your credit. This process should only take 30 mins to complete.
REMEMBER – Save your unfreeze documents!
When Not to Freeze Your Credit
- If you are considering taking out a line of credit or purchasing a home within the next year
- If you plan on moving within the next six months
Sharing is Caring
Equifax’s data breach affected over 40% of the US population. If you have friends or family members, please share this information.
